[Jacksonville, FL, August 4]
The Jacksonville RollerGirls have announced a
deal with WCWJ, CW17, to air roller derby bouts on local television starting
Saturday, September 25.
Several bouts have been shown on Comcast
Community Television over the past year, and now, the colorful personas of
“Crash Register,” “Meow Mix Yo’ Face Up,” “Sara Quill,” and a host of others,
are ready to show their skills on CW17’s new weekly episodic broadcasts,
scheduled for every Saturday at midnight.
“WCWJ, CW17, and YourJax.com are pleased to
bring another entertaining, original, local program to the viewers in Northeast
Florida and Southern Georgia this fall,” stated Marc Hefner, WCWJ’s Vice
President and General Manager.
“Roller derby is the fastest growing sport
worldwide—ever,” says Jacksonville RollerGirls Vice President, Melissa “Deviant
Behavior” Ludington. “Now with coverage
on CW17, the Jacksonville RollerGirls have the opportunity to entertain fans
year-round, and strengthen our existing partnerships with local community
organizations.”
“Roller derby was an institution in the early
years of television, and always had deep roots in showmanship. These days, the sport is as legitimate as,
say, football and golf, but nobody can deny roller derby’s enduring
entertainment value. This is what we
want to capture and bring to the Jacksonville audience,” explains producer Tommy
Riggins. Riggins will narrate the action
along with veteran local emcee Phil Loren.
